Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has condoled with the family of the late Dr Awoture Eleyae, over the passing away of the former Secretary-General of Supreme Council for Sports in Africa (SCSA).
The Governor’s condolence is contained in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, on Saturday in Asaba.
The Tide source reports that the late Eleyae, who died at the age of 96, hailed from Uzere in Isoko South Local Government Area of the state.
Oborevwori described the deceased as a sports scholar and administrator par excellence whose contributions to the growth and development of sports in Nigeria and Africa would not be forgotten.
He acknowledged the late Eleyae’s roles in strengthening the country’s sports administration, adding that he left behind an indelible mark on the nation’s development trajectory.
He said the deceased, who designed the National Institute for Sports (NIS), became its first Principal from 1975 to 1984.
“As National Chief Track and Athletics Coach, the late Eleyae captained the Nigerian Basketball team to the first All African Games in 1965 and led the Nigerian team as athletics coach to several Olympic games.
“He was a Director-General, National Sports Commission and later became Chairman of Bendel State Sports Council and Chairman, National Sports Award Committee.
“On behalf of the government and people of Delta State, I condole with the entire Eleyae family, the people of Uzere Kingdom, Isoko nation and the global sports community on the passing of the legendary Dr Awoture Eleyae.
“The Dr Awoture Eleyae Athletics Championship in Delta State instituted in his honour has continued to produce great athletes, including Ese Brume, Divine Oduduru, Usheoritse Itsekiri, and Raymond Ekevwo, among others”, he said.
Oborevwori prayed for the repose of Eleyae’s soul and to his family, the Uzere people, and Isoko nation, the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

His Imperial Majesty Eze Kelvin Ngozi Anugwo, Eze Ekpeye Logbo III of Ekpeye land has admitted His Royal Highness Eze, Frederick B. Uwame, regent of Eze Igbu Orlukwor into the fold of Ekpeye Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs.
The ceremony took place, last Saturday, at his palace in Ula–Upata Community in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The monarch stated that Orlukwor clan had already existed, and he, as the Eze Ekpeye Logbo III, as the Chairman, Ekpeye Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs, owed the people the blessings needed to accomplish any lofty ideas.
“It is a great day for the people of Ekpeye ethnic nation to gather at the palace of Eze Ekpeye Logbo III for the warm reception of Igbu Orlukwor.
“Igbu Orlukwor had already been received to the Supreme Council by my predecessor, Late His Imperial Majesty Eze Flt. Leut. Robinson O. Robinson, the Crocodile of Africa, in his life time.
“By the Ekpeye bye-law of 10th August 2010, Igbu Orlukwor was among the seven Igbus in Ekpeye Kingdom that signed the bye-law which is yet the working document of the traditional institution in Ekpeye today”, he noted.
He reiterated the need for people to put aside their personal interests for the common good of the generality, adding that the issue of autonomy should not be misconstrued to tear apart Ekpeye Kingdom.
According to him, Ekpeye craved for peace and development, and his reign could not divide Ekpeye Kingdom, and that it would rather put structures that engender peace and development of Ekpeye Kingdom.
He, therefore, seized the opportunity to call on irate youths of Ekpeye to lay down their arms for peace and development to thrive.
Speaking, the Igbu Orlukwor people, who were popularly known as O’ group, in their address, expressed gratitude to His Imperial Majesty and Ekpeye Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs for the opportunity granted them to introduce the regent of Orlukwor Kingdom.
“Igbu Orlukwor has great respect for Ekpeye throne and had keyed into Ekpeye Social Structure by adopting the Eze Igbu, Eze Emene, Eze Nwe Ula, and Eze Nwe Obodo hierarchy, and accordingly sub-divided Igbu Orlukwor into four groups, comprising Emene Owu Orlukwor, Emene Ugbokor Orlukwor, Emene Egbeleta Orlukwor, and Emene Ikega Orlukwor.
“Before the advent of colonialism in Ekpeye land, the seven O’ group villages in South East of Upata district: Obumeze, Odiabidi, Ogbele, Okomoma I, Okoma II, Okporowo, and Oshiugbokor had formed a joint community government for the purpose of defending themselves against external aggression and for resolving inter community conflict”, they stated.
The group said Igbu Orlukwor was long ago in the organogram during the recognition of the various clans of Ekpeye Kingdom by the first and foremost Ekpeye monarch, His Majesty Eze Ashirim Unoshi in 1974, which included Ahoada, Akoh, Upata I (U group), Upata II (O’ group), Igbuduya, and Ubie.
They noted further that HRH Eze Williams E. Unugboji was the incumbent leader of the Igbu Orlukwor when the kingship stools were created by Ekpeye and later recognised and classified by the Rivers State Government.
The O’ group noted that the Kingdom’s leadership provided the incumbency platform on which HRH Eze Unugboji was accorded recognition, adding that his domain, however, transversed the whole of Upata clan.
Speakers at the occasion included His Majesty Eze Cassidy W.O Ikebhidhi, Eze Igbu Akoh II of Ekpeye land; and His Majesty Eze Arc. Nnamdi Obuzor, Eze Odiokwu I of Ekpeye Kingdom.

The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) has trained exporters in Akwa Ibom State on the best production techniques of seafood to boost export in the nation’s non-oil sector.
The Deputy Director, NEPC, in Akwa Ibom State, Mrs Pauline Ndulaka, said at a one-day workshop for exporters in Uyo on Monday, that one of the visions of the agency in non-oil export was to have seafoods saturate the global market.
Ndulaka said for the vision to be realized, exporters and stakeholders in the seafood value chain must be updated on the global best production techniques and practices.
“Nigeria’s dependent on oil as a major source of income is not all that profitable; hence the option to get more serious with developing non-oil exports as the second line of defense and a clear strategy for economic diversification.
“We must all join hands to achieve this by making exportation seamless, signifying and exporting value-added products as much as we can to grasp a fair portion of the international market.
“Our objective is to expose stakeholders to various value-chain processes that would enhance seafood production in the state for export.
“We will enlighten producers on best practices and techniques for the production and processing of seafood, and reawaken the consciousness of seafood producers to the economic potentials of seafood, among others”, Ndulaka said.
The Chairman of Nigeria Store Product Research Institute (NSPRI), Dr Awugu Eminike, warned against destructive fishing methods to avoid negative effects on the entire marine ecosystem which can further trigger rejection at the global market.
Eminike, who spoke on the topic “Post Harvest Handling/Value Chain Processing/Preservation and Packaging of Seafood for Export”, urged exporters to make use of modern smoking and drying equipment fabricated by the research institute.
He said the machine, having passed through rigorous testing, has proved to maintain purity in processing seafood but advised that a high level of hygiene be maintained during all stages of post-harvest handling.
He urged exporters to constantly conduct market researches to understand the demand for specific seafood products, consumer preferences, and cultural considerations in the target market.

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, said the decision of his administration to construct the massive Ernest Ikoli Media Complex in Yenagoa was borne out of the important role the media plays in societal development.
Speaking during a visit to the complex, which houses the three state-owned media outlets – Radio Bayelsa, Niger Delta Television and New Waves Newspaper – on Tuesday, Governor Diri expressed satisfaction with the newly installed digital broadcast equipment, which he said were the best in the industry.
A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, quoted him as saying during a live interview on NDTV that as the fourth estate of the realm, the media remains a very important component of the state and the society at large and that his administration will treat it with the seriousness it deserves.
On the three senatorial road projects, the governor described them as very crucial to the state, saying they not only provide access of the rural communities to the state capital but will also open up the state’s economic zones.
He said it is unfortunate to see people play politics with these important projects, wondering why some opposition politicians do not seek expert opinion on areas they are not knowledgeable about but rather make ignorant comments.
Responding to a question on the issue of flooding, he said the state government was doing everything within its power to tackle the menace and called on the federal government to take practical steps such as building of dams to check the release of water from the dams outside the country.
His words: “I saw the level of decay in the physical infrastructure, especially of the radio station arising from a storm. The television station was far away in Gbarantoru and knowing the importance of the media, I said something had to be done.
“When we inaugurated this structure (in February 2022), there were a lot of naysayers who said we were inaugurating an empty structure. But today I am happy I am live here on NDTV and I am seeing very modern equipment that are arguably comparable to the best in the industry.
“The three senatorial roads are important to us. Tthat is why we are investing so much in them. It is unfortunate that some people are playing politics with it by making comments on areas they do not have the requisite knowledge rather than seeking the opinion of experts.”
Governor Diri also visited Radio Bayelsa where he partook in a live programme.
Luck however smiled on some ad hoc staff undergoing training at the television station when he enquired about their status and then directed the Commissioner for Information to ensure they are given immediate employment in the state civil service.
