ANALYSIS: Shrimp Less Volatile Than Other Proteins

Volatility provides a measure of price uncertainty in commodity markets and measures the degree of variation of price levels. Since price reflects supply and demand, high levels of volatility usually mean different supply and/or demand factors are influencing movements. These sharp fluctuations can create challenges to run any business.
While traders may welcome this, typical retail and foodservice buyers usually like a more stable pricing environment — mainly because of mitigating swings in consumer inflation and less costs for risk management…

Hong Kong Poised to Ban Japanese Seafood Over Treated Nuclear Wastewater
Hong Kong, one of the world’s biggest buyers of Japanese fish, says it will ban seafood imports from 10 prefectures in the country if Tokyo presses ahead with its plan to release treated radioactive water from Fukushima into the sea.
Tse Chin-wan, the city’s secretary for environment and ecology, said Wednesday the ban would include all “live, frozen, refrigerated and dried products or those preserved in other ways,” as well as sea salt and seaweed.

Russian Fishermen Accelerating Expansion in the African Region
Russian fishermen are accelerating their expansion in the African region by creating conditions for the increase of their exports to regional states.
As part of this, Russian authorities recently announced their plans to begin negotiations with the regulators of Mozambique on the reduction of import duties for Russian fish supplies which now reach 20%. The expansion in Mozambique and other countries of the region will provide Russian fishermen an access to the annual market of US$6 billion a year, and help diversify the risks of a possible complication of…

Days before the opening of the Gulf of Mexico commercial shrimp season, a group of shrimpers held a rally in Texas City to bring awareness to the plight of Texas shrimpers and the shrimping industry in general.
Tricia Kimball, whose husband Kyle is president of the Port Arthur Area Shrimpers Association, explained the effort.
The season for the Gulf of Mexico state and federal waters reopens 30 minutes after sunset Saturday, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Is IMO 2020 Shipping Regulation Worsening Global Warming?
It is scorching out there. High-temperature records are being broken daily. Oceans off some shores are as hot as bathwater. What is to blame? The list of culprits and possible culprits includes fossil fuel emissions, natural climate change, El Nino, changes in the Gulf Stream, the decline in Arctic Sea ice, the so-called Azores High pressure system and one contributing factor that will be familiar to those in ocean shipping: the IMO 2020 regulation.
The IMO 2020 regulation has significantly lowered harmful sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions, reducing risks of illness…
Gripes In Grimsby Over Brexit Fishing Failure
Grimsby, perched on the southern side of the River Humber, near Kingston-upon-Hull in northern England, was built on the fishing industry.
Some 70 percent of people in the town voted for Brexit, hoping that the UK’s departure from the European Union would boost its flagging fortunes.
But seven years on from the landmark referendum, those who banked on a turnaround are disappointed, while those who feared it are not taking it lying down.
At 7:00 am, the auction at Grimsby’s…

After three years of intense opposition by members of the community, a local company has quietly backed away from its plan to hydraulically dredge the ecologically sensitive St. Mary’s estuary for soft-shelled clams.
But, even the leader of the group aligned against the proposal can’t say for sure why Longshore Fisheries Ltd. (LFL) withdrew its application to the Nova Scotia Aquaculture Review Board for a new marine license and lease at Sonora only two months ago…
Warmer Ocean Temperatures Increase Risk of Salmon Bycatch in Pacific Hake Fishery
Rates of Chinook salmon bycatch in the Pacific hake fishery rise during years when ocean temperatures are warmer, a signal that climate change and increased frequency of marine heatwaves could lead to higher bycatch rates, new research indicates.
During years when sea surface temperatures were higher, including during a marine heatwave, Chinook salmon were more likely to overlap with the Pacific hake and raise the risk of bycatch as they sought refuge from higher temperatures.
The findings, based on 20 years of bycatch data and ocean temperature records…
