China steps in to process Hokkaido-produced scallops and sea cucumbers
SAPPORO, Japan — While Japan’s marine product exports have been growing, mostly thanks to Hokkaido’s scallop and sea cucumber industries, there are fears that the nation is losing its edge when it comes to high-end exports.
The fisheries sector is especially concerned with maintaining the competencies needed to produce the kind of luxury seafood that Chinese consumers pay a lot of money for.
