Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, said the decision of his administration to construct the massive Ernest Ikoli Media Complex in Yenagoa was borne out of the important role the media plays in societal development.
Speaking during a visit to the complex, which houses the three state-owned media outlets – Radio Bayelsa, Niger Delta Television and New Waves Newspaper – on Tuesday, Governor Diri expressed satisfaction with the newly installed digital broadcast equipment, which he said were the best in the industry.
A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, quoted him as saying during a live interview on NDTV that as the fourth estate of the realm, the media remains a very important component of the state and the society at large and that his administration will treat it with the seriousness it deserves.
On the three senatorial road projects, the governor described them as very crucial to the state, saying they not only provide access of the rural communities to the state capital but will also open up the state’s economic zones.
He said it is unfortunate to see people play politics with these important projects, wondering why some opposition politicians do not seek expert opinion on areas they are not knowledgeable about but rather make ignorant comments.
Responding to a question on the issue of flooding, he said the state government was doing everything within its power to tackle the menace and called on the federal government to take practical steps such as building of dams to check the release of water from the dams outside the country.
His words: “I saw the level of decay in the physical infrastructure, especially of the radio station arising from a storm. The television station was far away in Gbarantoru and knowing the importance of the media, I said something had to be done.
“When we inaugurated this structure (in February 2022), there were a lot of naysayers who said we were inaugurating an empty structure. But today I am happy I am live here on NDTV and I am seeing very modern equipment that are arguably comparable to the best in the industry.
“The three senatorial roads are important to us. Tthat is why we are investing so much in them. It is unfortunate that some people are playing politics with it by making comments on areas they do not have the requisite knowledge rather than seeking the opinion of experts.”
Governor Diri also visited Radio Bayelsa where he partook in a live programme.
Luck however smiled on some ad hoc staff undergoing training at the television station when he enquired about their status and then directed the Commissioner for Information to ensure they are given immediate employment in the state civil service.

The Bayelsa Elders Council (BEC) has given thumbs up to Governor Douye Diri for the developmental strides of his administration.
The elders expressed satisfaction particularly with infrastructure projects embarked upon by the Prosperity Administration in the state.
They gave the commendation during their meeting on Thursday in Yenagoa, which was attended by Governor Diri.
Chairman of the BEC, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah (rtd), in his remarks, described one of the roads among others constructed by the administration as the best in the state.
He said: “The dualized Glory Drive is one of the best roads in town today, which was not affected by last year’s flood.
“The other day l was coming from Nembe and l saw that the Igbogene-AIT ring road is almost complete. One important road that touches me is the Nembe-Brass road that you are undertaking.”
Jonah, an engineer and immediate past deputy governor of the state, also lauded Senator Diri ‘s efforts in the education sector.
He however urged the government to explore ways of developing the power sector as it has been liberalized to improve power supply and also reminded the governor on the issues of stipends and land allocation for their members.
Responding, Governor Diri expressed appreciation to the elders for the support and encouragement to his administration, its policies and programmes, and assured that their support would not be taken for granted.
The state’s helmsman restated his commitment to infrastructural transformation of the state, particularly on the capital-intensive three senatorial road projects.
He disclosed that the completed Glory Drive project would be inaugurated before November this year and the contract for the second phase to link Onopa would be awarded.
On the issue of security and the ban on commercial tricycles at night, he thanked the elders for supporting government’s decision, saying the policy has helped a great deal to reduce criminal activities in the state.
Diri disclosed that there has been tremendous pressure on him to lift the restriction on tricycles but said the ban will remain as the newly launched taxi cabs and buses would operate during the day and at night.
“I like to applaud our elders for working with government towards ensuring the security and development of Bayelsa. Security cannot be 100% perfect across the whole world. With your support, our security has improved to an appreciable level. That is why we established the Bayelsa State Community Safety Corps and we will soon introduce its riverine component.”
On comments made by the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former governor of the State that the government was constructing a metal bridge across the River Nun at Angiama to link Oporoma, Governor Diri said it was unfortunate and smacked of ignorance.
He explained that the structure was a temporary bridge, which aids the company facilitate the construction of a solid bridge across the river.
His words: “I like our elders to know that we are constructing a solid and not a metal bridge across River Nun. The temporary metal bridge hosts every heavy duty equipment of the construction company with which they are now launching the bridge being built.
“It is unfortunate when people speak out of ignorance, especially a governorship candidate who had been governor of this state; deceiving people that we are constructing a metal bridge to link Oporoma.”
On the issue of flooding and erosion, the governor advocated the dredging of rivers as well as a comprehensive state-wide study on how best federal and state governments should address the twin problems simultaneously.
He also suggested that the federal government build dams to check flood waters, stating that it was not enough to always issue flood alert to states.
Diri said his administration had almost completed rehabilitation works on failed portions of some roads impacted by last year’s flood along the Sagbama-Toru-Orua axis of the Sagbama-Ekeremor toad as well as the Amassoma and Opokuma roads.
The governor further stated that he raised the issue of flooding and its impact at the National Economic Council meetings where it was agreed that each geo-political zone should come up with a road project to be handled by the federal government.
He said the South-South governors chose the East-West road for the federal government to take immediate action.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State on Tuesday, said he had approved the payment of five billion naira promotion arrears to the state workers.
He said the payment would be effected in three tranches, starting from August to end in October 2023.
The Governor, who disclosed this while addressing workers during his visit to the Prof. Chike Edozien Secretariat in Asaba, the state capital, said it was part of his campaign promises to workers.
Oborevwori said the approval was sequel to a demand by the workers prior to the Governorship election in the state, which he promised to pay when he comes into office.
He said he had fulfilled his promise to the workers by approving payment of the promotion arrears and urged workers in the state to remain committed to their duties.
“As a promise keeper, I came here for two reasons; to see how you are doing in your work places and to bring the good news that the promotion arrears you have been demanding for all these years, have been approved.
“I have come here to notify you that I have approved it, because I am governor for all of you and for all the people of Delta, as I promised you with my M.O.R.E Agenda.
“We know the money is huge; its almost five billion naira, but I promised to pay you and I have signed the memo and approved it”, he said.
Oborevwori added, “you will be paid in three tranches from next month, August to October 2023. Continue to do more and work for the interest of this state.
“I thank you very much for your support and please don’t play with your work.
“I can come here anytime without informing the Head of Service.
“Today, I decided to inform him but the next time I am coming, I won’t notify you and I will just go into one of these offices to see what they are doing”.
Earlier, the State Head of Service, Mr Reginald Bayoko, who conducted the Governor round the secretariat, expressed appreciation to the governor for approving the payment of the promotion arrears and for visiting the workers.
Bayoko pledged the unalloyed commitment of the state’s workforce to the actualisation of the governor’s M.O.R.E Agenda.
The workers, who were excited by the governor’s visit, lauded Oborevwori for being the first governor to visit workers in their secretariat.
Oborevwori was accompanied by his Deputy, Monday Onyeme and other top government functionaries.

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has charged new caretaker committee chairmen of councils and their Rural Development Authority (RDA) counterparts in the state to reside in their local government headquarters.
Governor Diri gave the directive on Wednesday during the swearing-in ceremony of the eight councils and 32 RDA chairmen at the Executive Council Chambers of Government House, Yenagoa.
The oaths of allegiance and office were administered by the state Chief Registrar, Amaebi Oruka.
The governor in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, stressed that the government will frown at any council chairman that flouted the directive on residency.
He also directed the new chairmen and their RDA counterparts to appoint only five Supervisory Councilors and that they are only entitled to three personal aides.
Governor Diri equally reminded them that the embargo on employment was still in force and that loans from banks and private sources were prohibited.
He urged the National Assembly to consider creating more local government areas for the state, stating that Bayelsa deserves at least 30 constitutionally.
He said: “All caretaker committee chairmen and Rural Development Authority chairpersons are to reside in their local government headquarters and daily work there. Any travel outside the local government must be with the permission from my office.
“For the eight local government chairmen, you are to appoint five supervisory counselors. You are entitled to three special assistants only. And they are personal assistant, chief security officer and protocol officer.
“There is still embargo on employment at all levels of staff be it temporary or casual employment. There is also a complete ban on all forms of borrowing, including loans from the bank and private sources.
“For emphasis, the issue of residency is very serious. We have had council chairmen that resided in Yenagoa. But we will no longer tolerate any chairman of council that makes Yenagoa his home rather than residing in the headquarters of the council or development authority.
“Bayelsa State currently has eight local government councils as enshrined and recognized by the 1999 constitution as amended. I therefore like to call on all members of the National Assembly from the state to make effort to ensure our 24 RDAs are recognized as local government councils.
“Local government councils should actually be the creation of the people of a particular state, depending on their resources. I do believe and know that if we control our resources in Bayelsa, we can create the number of local governments that will benefit our people.”
The new caretaker committee chairmen are Alabo Hanson Karima (Brass), Chief. Belemu Nemine (Ekeremor), Inemo Oruebimiekumo (Kolokuma/Opokuma ) and Chief Samuel Kalaguo (Nembe)
Others are Chief Ibu Williams Mizodome (Ogbia), Richman Samuel Ebipade (Sagbama), Lucky Okodeh (Souther Ijaw), and Mr. Tobi Andy (Yenagoa).
Among the newly appointed 32 RDA chairpersons were seven women.
