Ruin Befalls Peninsula Crab Families; Sympathy Pours in From All Quarters
ILWACO – The percussion of exploding forklift tanks, popping tires and the wounded squawk of a worker’s dying car horn accompanied the monstrous growl of boiling flames as dozens of families witnessed the death of their livelihoods.
Monday’s fiery destruction of Bornstein Seafoods’ Ilwaco receiving facility not only meant loss of corporate assets, it came at the worst possible time for many of south Pacific County’s proud fleet of independent commercial crabbers. Their pre-staged crab pots – estimated at as many as 3,800 valued at close to $2 million…

Washington’s coastal Dungeness crab commercial season will open coastwide with a reduced pot limit on Feb. 1, state fishery managers announced this month.
The coastal Dungeness crab industry is one of the most important commercial fisheries in the state, particularly for coastal communities and economies. According toa recent report by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), the value of state crab landings during the 2022-23 season was $64.6 million. This is the second-highest total value recorded in the past 10 years, surpassed only by…

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced the closure of the Southeast section of the fishery Monday. The area guideline harvest level was set at 465,000 pounds.
On Sunday, the largest of the…
Refinancing Clearwater Loan Worth Millions in Annual Cash Flow for Mi’kmaw Owners
Mi’kmaw First Nations that own half of Canadian seafood giant Clearwater will finally start seeing multi-million dollar cash flows from their investment thanks to a loan refinancing that slashes interest payments.
Their partner in the landmark deal — Premium Brands of Richmond, B.C. — lent a coalition of seven Mi’kmaw First Nations about $240 million to cover their equity purchase of Clearwater in 2020.
But the loan came with a hefty 10 per cent interest rate, according to the non-profit First Nations Financial Authority…
Lobster Plant Closure Causes Concerns
Community leaders and advocates for foreign workers are expressing concerns about how the unexpected closure of an Escuminac lobster plant will impact the local economy and the plant’s staff.
Miramichi-Grand Lake MP Jake Stewart issued a news release Saturday about the looming shutdown of Raymond O’Neill and Sons Fisheries, east of Miramichi, expressing “deep concern” for the 135 workers being impacted.
The plant is reportedly closing its doors two years after it was acquired by a U.S. investment firm, ACON Investments, based in Washington, D.C. Stewart said the plant’s parent company…
Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, Partners Using Dungeness Crab DNA for Population Study
The Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe is working with a diverse group of partners to learn more about the population structure of Puget Sound’s Dungeness crab by studying the DNA of both larvae and adults.
“The main question our team is looking to answer is whether Dungeness crab in the region belong to a single large population or are there multiple genetically distinct populations?” said Liz Tobin, the tribe’s shellfish program manager.
Biologists have been working with tribal and non-tribal commercial crab fishermen to collect genetic material from…
Tybee Company Makes History With Harvest From Georgia’s First Floating Oyster Farm
At a dock along Chatham County’s Bull River, Perry and Laura Solomon repeat what has become a familiar routine over the last eight months.
Bundled in waterproof coveralls, winter coats and stocking caps, the couple boards their 21-foot Carolina Skiff – the same vessel Perry’s late father used to lead dolphin-viewing tours around Tybee Island – at Savannah Boathouse Marina on a cold January afternoon.
Laura pushes away from the dock, cueing her husband and business partner to open the throttle. The skiff skips along the…

Two New Offshore Wind Farms Approved in New Jersey
Plans for two new offshore wind farms were advanced Wednesday morning by New Jersey months after the prospects of wind energy off the Jersey Shore coast met significant headwinds.
Contracts for the two new projects — combined with a third already approved by the state — will mean New Jersey is still on course to add enough power for more than a million homes in the next seven years or so despite two wind farms falling through in the fall.

ASEAN Lobster Exports Surge Amid Australian Ban
Southeast Asian countries are fishing for more opportunities to get their lobsters onto Chinese plates, and analysts expect the trend will not only intensify, but also become increasingly difficult to reverse the longer Beijing’s protracted ban on Australian rock lobsters remains in effect.
According to the General Administration of Customs, China’s major source of rock lobsters is now New Zealand, which accounts for almost 40 per cent of the total market share, followed by Mexico and the United States at 20 and 16 per cent, respectively.
Meanwhile, three Asean members…
Marine Heat Waves Trigger Shift in Hatch Dates and Early Growth of Pacific Cod
Marine heat waves appear to trigger earlier reproduction, high mortality in early life stages and fewer surviving juvenile Pacific cod in the Gulf of Alaska, a new study from Oregon State University shows.
These changes in the hatch cycle and early growth patterns persisted in years following the marine heat waves, which could have implications for the future of Gulf of Alaska Pacific cod, an economically and culturally significant species, said Jessica Miller of OSU’s Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station at…

Change to Minimum U.S. Lobster Size ‘A Big Jump,’ Says P.E.I. Marketing Board
Pending increases in the legal size of lobster that can be sold in the U.S. are something to watch, says the chair of the Lobster Fishers of P.E.I. Marketing Board.
But Charlie McGeoghegan says it likely won’t be as much of a problem as some other groups in the Maritimes fear.
Studies of the state of the lobster stock on the Eastern Seaboard have triggered an automatic increase in the size of lobster that can be harvested for the U.S. market. The studies found a…

Georgia’s Shrimp Season Closes as Challenges Loom
Commercial shrimpers battled an influx of foreign shrimp and high diesel fuel prices that they said put a dent in their abilities to make a fair profit, despite average hauls weighing heavier than the 20-year average.
Georgia’s commercial and recreational food shrimp harvest in state waters closed at 6:20 p.m. on Thursday, a closure that only affects waters three nautical miles out to see from shore. Federal waters from three to 200 miles offshore remain open.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ commissioner, Walter Rabon, extended the shrimp season beyond…
Lack of Firefighting Skills Cited in Sinking of Nova Scotia Trawler That Caught Fire
The Transportation Safety Board says the 2021 sinking of a large fishing boat that caught fire off the south coast of Nova Scotia raises broad concerns about the lack of firefighting knowledge among crews in general.
The independent agency released an investigation report Wednesday about the demise of the FV Atlantic Destiny, which had 31 crew members aboard when it was rocked by a catastrophic engine failure that sparked an explosion and fire on March 2, 2021.
No one was injured by…
A Seafood Merchant Has Never Seen Crawfish So Scarce on the Mississippi Coast. What Happened?
Third-generation crawfish merchant Cameron Cuevas has never seen the mudbugs so scarce.
“Normally, by January 1, we’re pushing a lot of volume of crawfish,” Cuevas, owner of Claw Daddy’s Crawfish in Gulfport, told the Sun Herald on Tuesday. “We haven’t sold a crawfish this season.”
Cuevas said sales records show this is the latest start to the season in at least 16 years. Prices have more than tripled, he said. The few crawfish that are available are selling for…
Conservation Group Wants Ottowa to Allow More Striped Bass Kills to Help Wild Salmon Survive
Alarmed by the record low run of wild Atlantic salmon on the Miramichi River, a conservation group wants Ottawa to allow more people to catch one of their top predators: striped bass.
The Atlantic Salmon Federation has formally asked the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, or DFO, to change the way it manages striped bass in the Gulf of St. Lawrence region.
Striped bass, once a threatened species in the early 1990s, have come soaring back thanks to DFO’s conservation measures. The number of…
Scotland’s Pelagic Fishermen Urge Coastal States to Focus on More Equitable Quota Shares
Scotland’s pelagic fishermen have urged the Coastal States fishing mackerel, blue whiting and Atlanto-Scandian herring in the north-east Atlantic to focus on more equitable quota shares as they renew their efforts to agree long-term sharing agreements for each of these stocks.
After more than a year of minimal progress, during which aggregate catches of all three stocks exceeded scientific advice, talks are due to resume on sharing in London next week.
“Zonal attachment – essentially, the principle that quota shares should be…

A Bering Sea-bound catcher-processor made an unscheduled stop in Kodiak Saturday evening to get medical care for six injured crew members.
Ambulances from the city of Kodiak Fire Department took the crew members to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center, where they were treated and released later Saturday evening.
Seattle-based Araho, a 195-foot groundfishing vessel with a crew of 50, reported Thursday afternoon to the U.S. Coast Guard Southeast Command in Sitka that a rogue wave had knocked out three windows approximately 20 feet above the vessel’s waterline below…

Alaska: Remembering the Tanner Crab Fishery of 1989
Kodiak’s Tanner crab fishery is winding down with Sunday’s closure of the Eastside District and Monday’s closure of the Southeast District at a civilized 5:59 p.m.
It is a rather civilized fishery, since participants are only allowed to pull pots for 10 hours each day during the season, from 8 a.m. to 5:59 p.m., and are limited to 20 pots per vessel.
However, the weather could have been better, and the capsizing of the Alaska Rose is a reminder that winter is always a dangerous time to…
