Pakistan has negotiated a two-year extension until December 31, 2025, allowing the continued export of fish and fish products to the US without complying with the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) of 2016.
Under the MMPA, the US prohibits imports of products caught using techniques that harm marine mammals. Pakistan has joined 130 countries exempted from these rules, as announced in the Federal Register.
Originally given five years to align with US standards, Pakistan and others need more time to comply with the set standards. The National Marine Fisheries Service evaluated compliance but admitted the challenges associated with assessing marine mammal harm.
The Department of Commerce and NMFS agreed on more time for fair evaluations. Pakistan sees the extension as proof of its commitment to aligning practices with global standards and vows to adhere to the standard soon.
This move sets a precedent, showcasing Pakistan’s focus on sustainable fishing. It urges other nations to consider similar measures for a responsible seafood industry.
